Texas Attorney General Pushes to Close Unlicensed Care Facilities

The state of Texas is currently working to close several unlicensed assisted living facilities.

Care Setting

The closure was reported recently regarding these facilities, which are self-designated as assisted living facilities, are not by any means the idyllic image of a long term care setting. Instead, they are often residential homes that do not provide the necessary services. It is important that consumers be aware of what type of place they are sending their loved ones.

Too often, people choose the first long term care facility they hear about because they are simply desperate to make a decision and begin the care process. Many times, they don’t bother to check whether or not the facility even has the proper license before packing up and moving in their loved ones. The key to avoiding this type of disaster is to properly research facilities beforehand, whether it takes a little bit of extra time or not. It could make all the difference.

Prepare Ahead of Time

For many people, planning for long term care means purchasing long term care insurance. This type of insurance policy provides a number of benefits, but one of the most important is something called Care Coordination. This benefit supplies the claimant with a designated Care Coordinator, typically a nurse or health professional, who will assist you in developing a plan of care and mediating the discussion between you and the insurance agency.

One of the most helpful parts of Care Coordination, however, is that the Care Coordinator will help you locate facilities in the area and give you suggestions. Some companies even include a facility inspection, where the Care Coordinator visits the facility and provides the claimant with a detailed report. If you would prefer to receive care in your home, most top rated policies provide that benefit, as well, so you don’t even have to worry about finding a facility.

A lot of people invest in long term care insurance simply for the additional benefits, because they alleviate a huge amount of stress from the claimant and their family.
